Frequently Asked Questions

A “Village” in the Village to Village Network is not a building or residential facility for seniors. A Village is a group of local people who share the goal of helping older residents to age at home if they choose, rather than in an institutional setting. The practical support and friendly connections of an active Village help many older people live more easily and feel more connected and valued.

Cville Village is Charlottesville/Albemarle County’s own village. We provide support and connection for aging in place in our community. We are a member of Village to Village Network, Washington Area Villages Exchange, and Virginia Villages Collective.

A person aged 55 or older who lives within Cville Village’s service area can apply to join. Each prospective member or member/volunteer is interviewed to clarify what Village services are (and aren’t), and whether they are a good fit for Village participation. For example, requests for practical assistance such as rides, small home tasks, or computer help are often fulfilled, as are many other diverse requests. However, Village volunteers are not permitted to provide medical support or personal care, such as hygiene or transfers.

Issues such as advanced dementia, immobility or addiction are best served by health care professionals, rather than by volunteers who lack the qualifications to offer help safely. Cville Village responds to such situations with compassion and will offer suggestions for alternative resources. We prioritize peace and safety for all, including members and volunteers.

Our service area includes the city of Charlottesville, and the sections of Albemarle County that are within about 2 miles of the city limits. Roughly, this is north on US 29 to Polo Grounds Rd; south to the new Biscuit Run Park on Scottsville Rd (VA 20); east to the intersection of US 250 and Interstate 64, including all of Pantops; west to Old Garth Rd/Farmington/Ednam/US 29 bypass. If you’re not sure whether you’re in our service area, contact us at info@cvillevillage.org for help.

Annual membership dues are $150 per year for individuals. Household discounts and need-based sponsorships are available. Contact us for details.

A maximum of three Village services per week for an individual member is the recommended amount most Villages can administer successfully, particularly in early years. Over time, policies may be adjusted as needed.

Absolutely! Situations are individual, and sometimes a particular task is top of mind. Examples: Decluttering help. Or, how about changing an overhead light bulb? Walking a dog while you recuperate? Thinning the irises? Your needs are unique, and if a volunteer has skills to match, we’ll be ready to fulfill your request. (Hint: more volunteers = more needs met.)

Cville Village no longer requires, but highly recommends, COVID and seasonal flu vaccines for members and volunteers. If you don’t feel well, please test prior to attending any in-person events or if you anticipate close contact with a volunteer, such as a ride in a volunteer’s car. Use of N95 masks is always an option; either a member or a volunteer can request mask use.

Yes. All Cville Village volunteers must pass a background check that takes just a few minutes to submit online and costs $50. Results are confidential.

In many Villages, members and volunteers organize special outings, classes or activities to bring the Village community together. Cville Village hosts periodic information sessions around our area, community celebrations, and other outreach. There are monthly meetups at local watering holes; a walking group; and occasional free or low-cost educational and social programs for Cville Villagers. Our brand new Foresight support group for people with visual impairments has scheduled meetings and is growing fast! We welcome suggestions from members and volunteers for activities they can help organize.

Cville Village plans to rent an administrative office space when funding allows, as we need a centralized space.  Meanwhile, we hold various meetings at local churches, community centers, in homes and online.

You can donate, volunteer or both! We need ongoing funds to realize the vision of Cville Village. To donate, please visit cvillevillage.org and click DONATE. To volunteer, click here or email your interest to info@cvillevillage.org. Thank you!
